Time was when being a professional journalist was an honorable calling.

There were always some outlets that pushed the envelope. (Think National Enquirer.) And the Fourth Estate has had its share of scandals that called into question reporters’ ethics and the system of checks and balances in place at some of our most respected news organizations. (Think Janet Cooke, Jayson Blair, or 60 Minutes’ use of forged documents challenging President George W. Bush’s military record.)
